ХАРКІВСЬКА ДЕРЖАВНА АКАДЕМІЯ ДИЗАЙНУ І МИСТЕЦТВ РАЗОМ З ELIA - European League of Institutes of the Arts

The ELIA Biennial 2022 welcomed leaders from arts and academia, practitioners, professionals, students, change makers, dreamers and doers.

The Abakanowicz Arts and Culture Charitable Foundation (AACCF), in collaboration with ELIA, the European League of Institutes of the Arts, in November 2022 announced its largest gift to date to support art students and universities in Ukraine. Kharkiv State Academy of Design and Arts was given the opportunity to take part in this project, known as the UAx Platform.

The aim of this project is to support war-affected art students who have remained in Ukraine hoping to continue their degree studies and build their artistic practice, and Ukrainian Higher Arts Education institutions which are struggling to deliver teaching during a time of crisis.

The main tenet of the UAx Platform is one that Magdalena Abakanowicz would well understand: to enable war-affected artists to carry out one of their most important responsibilities - creating work in the face of oppression. Through the UAx Platform, the European League of Institutes of the Arts (ELIA), with funding from the Abakanowicz Arts and Culture Charitable Foundation (AACCF), will address three primary groups: (1) students currently enrolled in Ukrainian art education institutions, (2) Ukrainian institutions active in Higher Arts Education, and (3) ELIA member institutions ready to connect to counterparts in Ukraine as UAx Sister Schools.

The Platform will provide limited emergency funding for Ukrainian students to be disbursed as UAx bursaries to individuals in severe need. The goal is to strengthen the resilience of art universities and academies in Ukraine and provide companionship in times of crisis and recovery. As a membership network of nearly 300 art institutions and academies, ELIA understands the significance of solidarity. The UAx initiative is built on the belief that art institutions care for other art institutions. To this end, UAx will directly support Ukrainian artists in schools through peer mentoring, knowledge exchange, and capacity building for their institutions. While this proposal covers a three-year time frame, we see the life and legacy of UAx as extending further into the future.
